Core Definition
Amorphous thermoplastic engineering plastic, mainly copolymerized from ethylene and norbornene under metallocene catalysis. Often referred to collectively with structurally similar COP (Cyclo Olefin Polymer), it is a key material for high-end optical and medical fields.
Core Properties
- Optical: Light transmittance ≈ 91%, low birefringence and high Abbe number, close to that of glass.
- Physical: Ultra-low hygroscopicity, high dimensional stability, high rigidity, low density, and heat resistance (Tg adjustable from 75–170℃).
- Chemical/Biological: Resistant to common acids, alkalis and radiation sterilization; low extractables and good biocompatibility, suitable for medical and food contact applications.
- Processing: Good for injection molding, extrusion and blow molding; low high-frequency dielectric loss.
Disadvantages
Ordinary impact toughness, limited resistance to organic solvents, and relatively high cost.
Typical Applications
Optics (mobile phone/vehicle-mounted lenses, AR/VR lenses, light guide plates), medical care (prefilled syringes, microfluidic chips, pharmaceutical packaging), electronics (high-frequency substrates, film capacitors), and high-end food/aseptic packaging.
