PMMA
Core Definition
An amorphous thermoplastic, prepared by free radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA). It is a representative transparent plastic with excellent optical properties, easy processability and high cost-effectiveness.
Core Properties
- Optical: Light transmittance up to 92% (superior to PC), uniform light transmission, excellent weather resistance (resists yellowing outdoors), and compatible with dyeing, coating and screen printing.
- Mechanical: High hardness, good surface gloss, and better scratch resistance than conventional plastics. However, it has poor impact resistance (far lower than PC) and obvious brittleness.
- Thermal & Electrical: Long-term service temperature around 80°C, with a heat deflection temperature lower than PC. It features good electrical insulation and stable high-frequency performance.
- Processing & Chemical: Suitable for injection molding, extrusion, thermoforming and laser cutting. Resistant to weak acids and alkalis, but not to strong solvents such as aromatic hydrocarbons and ketones. Low density (approx. 1.19 g/cm³), with a weight only half that of ordinary glass.

Optical components (billboard light boxes, lamp shades, eyeglass lenses, light guide plates), architectural decoration (partition walls, skylights, display cabinets), electrical & electronics (display panels, instrument housings), medical devices (dental prostheses, contact lens substrates), and automotive interiors (instrument panels, decorative parts).
