Core Definition

A semi-crystalline thermoplastic commodity plastic, polymerized from propylene monomers via Ziegler-Natta/metallocene catalysis. It is a representative commodity plastic with large output, low cost and balanced performance, available in homopolymer and copolymer (block/random) grades.
 

Core Properties

  • Mechanical: Ultra-low density (0.90–0.91 g/cm³, lightweight among plastics). Rigidity and toughness can be adjusted by copolymerization/modification. Random copolymers offer better impact resistance and low-temperature performance, while homopolymers have higher rigidity. Excellent fatigue resistance and flexural fatigue resistance (ideal for hinge components).
  • Thermal & Chemical Resistance: Long-term service temperature around 100°C (heat-resistant modified grades can reach 120°C+), compatible with 130°C steam sterilization. Resistant to acids, alkalis, salts and most organic solvents, but poor in aging resistance (antioxidants/UV stabilizers are required).
  • Processing & Others: Easy for injection molding, extrusion, blow molding and thermoforming, with short molding cycles. Non-toxic and odorless, compliant with food contact standards. Good electrical insulation and ultra-low water absorption (excellent dimensional stability). Drawbacks include low-temperature brittleness (homopolymers) and relatively high shrinkage rate.
 

Typical Applications

Packaging (food containers, films, non-woven fabrics, turnover boxes), automotive (bumpers, interior parts, battery cases), home appliances (washing machine drums, bottle caps), medical devices (syringes, infusion bags, disposable consumables), pipes (PPR water supply pipes), and daily necessities (plastic chairs, toys).
