Unlike petroleum-derived nylon 6 and nylon 66, which are predominantly utilized as engineering plastics, bio-based nylon boasts a wide array of applications. These include natural gas transmission pipelines, medical protective goggles, metal protective coatings, high-end fire-resistant oil-gas separators and crankshaft end caps, food packaging, replacement of nylon 11 and nylon 12 in automotive fuel lines, LED encapsulation components, sports equipment, and optical fibers, among others.

Evonik's bio-based plastic VESTAMID® Terra, used for zippers and fabric tapes, is made from castor seeds.

BASF's Ultramid® Balance, an innovative polyamide (PA) solution, is employed in the production of new rear bumper brackets.

Bio Amni® is developed with all the characteristics of Solvay's functional polyamides: maintaining product freshness and safety during daily use, breathability, moisture absorption, smooth texture, easy care, and ultra-fast drying. It is suitable for sportswear, beachwear, intimate apparel, footwear, and more.

The scarcity of petroleum resources and the environmental issues associated with their utilization urgently need to be addressed. Consequently, various solutions for bio-based nylon have garnered widespread attention, and its commercial application is poised to become one of the mainstream trends.

However, it is important to note that the development of bio-based nylon still faces several significant challenges:

  1. Biomass Sources: Ensuring sustainable and scalable raw material supply.
  2. Carbon Neutrality in Production: Achieving carbon neutrality throughout the manufacturing process.
  3. Comprehensive Utilization of By-products: Effectively utilizing by-products generated during production.
  4. Performance of Bio-Based Nylon Materials and Products: Ensuring that bio-based nylon meets or exceeds the performance standards of traditional petroleum-based nylon.

These challenges have resulted in bio-based nylon currently accounting for less than 1% of total nylon production. Nevertheless, traditional industrial enterprises are gradually initiating research into these issues, indicating that this could become one of the next recognized market opportunities. The research value of bio-based nylon is also increasing daily, and its growth rate is expected to continue leading the materials market.
