Performance Characteristics:
Excellent heat resistance: The decomposition temperature typically exceeds 500°C, allowing long-term use within a temperature range of -269°C to 280°C, with short-term exposure to temperatures up to 400°C.
Good mechanical properties: The tensile strength of unreinforced base materials generally exceeds 100 MPa, with biphenyl-type polyimide (Upilex S) reaching up to 400 MPa. Polyimide fibers have an elastic modulus of up to 500 MPa, second only to carbon fibers.
Outstanding chemical stability: Polyimide is generally insoluble in organic solvents, resistant to corrosion and hydrolysis, and some variants can withstand boiling water at 2 atmospheres and 120°C for 500 hours.
Remarkable electrical properties: It has a dielectric constant of less than 3.5, a dielectric loss of 10, a dielectric strength of 100 to 300 kV/mm, and a volume resistivity of 10^15-17 Ω·cm.
Excellent radiation resistance: Polyimide films retain 86% of their strength after exposure to 5×10^9 rad of radiation, and certain polyimide fibers maintain 90% of their strength after 1×10^10 rad of fast electron radiation.
