ABS resin is the most produced and widely used polymer, which organically integrates the various properties of PB, PAN, and PS, exhibiting excellent mechanical properties with a balanced combination of toughness, hardness, and rigidity. ABS is a terpolymer of acrylonitrile, butadiene, and styrene, where A represents acrylonitrile, B represents butadiene, and S represents styrene. Practical use has revealed that ABS plastic pipes are not resistant to sulfuric acid corrosion and will shatter upon contact with sulfuric acid.
Due to its three components, ABS possesses excellent properties: acrylonitrile imparts chemical stability, oil resistance, and a certain degree of stiffness and hardness to ABS resin; butadiene enhances its toughness, impact resistance, and cold resistance; styrene provides good dielectric properties and excellent processability.
Most ABS is non-toxic, water-impermeable, but slightly permeable to water vapor, with low water absorption. When immersed in water at room temperature for one year, the water absorption rate does not exceed 1%, and its physical properties remain unchanged. The surface of ABS resin products can be polished to achieve a highly glossy finish. Its strength is 3-5 times higher than that of ordinary plastics.
ABS possesses excellent comprehensive physical and mechanical properties, with good low-temperature impact resistance, dimensional stability, electrical performance, wear resistance, chemical resistance, dyeability, and ease of processing and machining. ABS resin is resistant to water, inorganic salts, alkalis, and acids, insoluble in most alcohols and hydrocarbon solvents, but easily soluble in aldehydes, ketones, esters, and certain chlorinated hydrocarbons. ABS resin has a low heat deflection temperature, is flammable, and has poor heat resistance. Its melting temperature ranges from 217 to 237°C, and its thermal decomposition temperature exceeds 250°C. In today's market, many modified ABS materials are blended with regrind or recycled materials, leading to unstable performance in the final molded products for customers.
